Domes Available to Tour at the Monolithic Dome Institute
Headquarters in Italy, Texas

- The Orion: This
new design uses 17 straight 8 x 8 walls laid out in a
circle to form a 48 diameter dome. It is 2,400 Square feet featuring
three bedrooms and 2½ baths.
- Italy High School
Multipurpose Building: This two-story, 148 diameter
Multipurpose Center includes a gymnasium with walking track, seating
for 1500, 4 locker rooms, concessions area, ticket booth, plenty of
storage space and concrete parking area.
- Callisto:
This 50-foot diameter dome encompasses 1,964 square feet and includes
three bedrooms, two baths, a large central living area, a small den
and an office. Expansive windows outline the central kitchen and living
area overlooking a covered porch and a pond.
- MDI Headquarters:
- Office complex. The main offices for Monolithic encompass over 4,400
SF. One 50-foot dome houses the front sales office and three additional
40-foot domes comprise the design, marketing and construction offices.
- Shamrock
Chateau: Home of Larry and Marilee Byrne. Its interior design
(p. 82 of Dome Living) consists
of 2660 square feet in three domes, with diameters of 30, 40 and 32
feet. An expansive, curved entry way with high ceilings opens into
the large center dome with its living/dining area, TV/family room
and kitchen.
- Bruco, The Texas
Italian Caterpillar: The 14,000 SF Airform manufacturing plant
is 240? long by 60? wide by 24? tall.
- MDI Training Center:Our new training center used especially
for Monolithic Dome Workshops.
It is a 2,600 SF facility built using four 32? x 13? domes intersected
together.
- Monolithic Equipment
Manufacturing: The 60' x 20' copper dome is the prototype manufacturing
plant for Monolithic Equipment including the Polestar rotating scaffold
base and specialized mixers and pumps.
- Shops / Storage: Four 32? x 13? domes are used for clean
storage, long term storage, paint shop, and kitchen.
- EcoShell I:
This 30' x 13' Ecoshell I is one of the first Ecoshells ever built.
It is currently being used as long term storage.
- Pumpkin Domes:The two sandstone colored 40' diameter domes
are named pumpkin domes because of their low, crinkled shape. The
drinkling is caused by the low ellipsoid shape of the domes. #2 is
currently being leased to SIDS as a machine shop.
- Visitor Center / UniShell: The new visitor's center is an Io-20. This is the same floorplan of the rental units we offer at Morgan Meadows. This dome is always open to the public. Inside is a self-serve
video kiosk showing a 15 minute introduction to the Monolithic Dome and video tour of our headquarters.
The UniShell is a 20? diameter EcoShell II. It is used to demonstrate
the viability of domes as housing in developing, equatorial countries. This shell meets the
space requirements set by the United Nations.
- Charca Casa:The
residence of David B South, President of the Monolithic Dome Institute.
It is two 40? x 16? domes connected by a conventionally built breezway.
It features many bedrooms, three baths, kitchen, dining, living room,
family room, and more in 2,700 SF.
